West After School Center is Awarded Technology Mini-Grants

The West After School Center has been awarded two mini-grants that will provide support the development of an information technology and multimedia literacy program for our students. We have been awarded grants from the Gannett Foundation and the Fairfield County Foundation to support this special project. Dr. Alison Colman, formerly an art education professor at Ohio University, has extensive experience conducting multimedia workshops for students and will begin working with and training our students and staff on Fridays beginning on January 4, 2008. Stop by and see what the students will be learning and creating—and feel free to spend time learning with our students.

West After School Center Conferences Coming in January

At the mid-year point, we think it is important to spend time with each child’s parent/s to assess progress, discuss and develop future goals and learning objectives, review procedures and expectations, and listen to and address any questions or concerns that parents might have. We view these short conferences as a two-way learning and information sharing opportunity. We want our parents to be informed and knowledgeable about the use of the LeapTrack program and other activities at our center. We also ask parents to complete a short computer survey. These conferences will be scheduled the week of January 14, 2008, as parents pick up children at the center.

MEAL PROGRAM at the WASC

The West After School Center is registered with the Ohio Department of Education as a meal sponsor with the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Because we no longer partner with Lancaster City Schools for snacks, we must provide our own documentation for reimbursement as a sponsor in this program. As a result, family income documentation must be on file at our center.

We can provide 1 free daily snack for all program enrollees, 2 meals (breakfast and supper) based on income verification. We can also serve supper to those students under age 18 for $3.00.  Parents, staff, and adult visitors are welcome to eat supper with the students, 5:30 each day, for the fee of $3.00.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding with the paperwork requirements as we establish this program and service  to the community.

The flagship program of the West After School Center is the After School Tutoring Program which targets those students needing additional help in reading and math.  But most other programs and services are open to all students and families of

West Elementary School.

Phone 740-653-5678 for answers to your questions.
