On Friday Sept. 11, 2009,
our Principal, Mr. Lawson, spoke with the Tallmadge CLC students about
being HEROES (Honesty, Effort, Respect, Ownership, Excellence, Safety)
and recognized our first after-school HERO, Corvon Eagle. Corvon had
his picture taken with the Mr. Lawson and was awarded a Snickers candy
bar for being a classroom HERO. Congratulations, Corvon, for being a
HERO and setting a good example for all to follow.

The students at the WASC
participated in "Patriot Day" by writing and illustrating cards to send
to our servicemen and women overseas. Patriot Day was designated by
Congress to remember the events of September 11, 2001. |

Imagine how all kids would perform in school if they spent the hours after their parents left for work each morning getting a jump start on what they will learn in the classroom? It happens every morning in the childcare program sponsored by the West After School Center! |

The West After School Center was the recipient of four boxes of a books from a drive during August that our local Waldenbook Store in the River Valley Mall conducts twice each year for community non-profit agencies. The assistant manager, Katie Hewitt, chose our agency because of the signs she saw throughout Lancaster during the summer lunch program. We appreciate the staff at Waldenbooks targeting our agency and their support of this project.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs Whether we choose to believe it or not, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that our country and others in the northern hemisphere will experience an outbreak, possibly a pandemic, of the H1N1 Flu as the weather turns colder in the coming weeks and months. Preparation is important to effectively deal with what might transpire. We can minimize the effects of the flu and its spread by following some good health habits.
There is no vaccine available
at this time for this new flu virus, so it is important for people
living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the
virus to others. If people are ill, they should stay at home and
limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy
residents living in impacted areas should take the everyday preventive
actions listed above. |

NAA and BAM Radio Network have partnered to bring you NAA Radio.
Executive Director Judy Nee hosts the program that will focus on the
topics you really care about. Each brief segment of NAA radio will bring
afterschool professionals the latest insights, practices and
developments in the care of children and youth during their
out-of-school hours.
Hear what Sandi Delack, President of the National Association of
School Nurses, recommends we can be doing to prepare what may be an
extraordinary flue season. |

These resources are becoming part of a training workshop being planned by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) to promote collaboration between principals and after-school program leaders and the development of extended learning opportunities for children. Plans for developing a train-the-trainer professional development program for principals in Ohio will soon be complete with a goal of preparing teams of principals and after-school leaders to engage and assist others in all parts of the state in this important and ongoing work.

The Goals for our Television Program: 1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school. 3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks. 4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles. 5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development. |
