AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

Austin Sayhonne, Grade 3

This week, the Cedar Community Learning Center recognizes Austin Sayhonne, third grader at Cedar Heights. Austin has been in the Cedar CLC before- and after-school program since November, 2008. Austin is proud that his behavior has improved in the classroom and his participation increased. Austin is a pleasure to work with one-on-one, and the positive influence he receives after school from adults really matters to him. We are pleased to continue to be a part of Austin's life as well as 22 others currently enrolled this week at the Cedar CLC.

East Community Learning Center

The East Community Learning Center opened on September 8 with 40 students attending. As you can see by the picture at left, students have been engaged in unique ways to reinforce learning that takes place in their regular classrooms. How many kids in our community that do not have access to an after-school program do you think enjoy practicing their spelling  words (with supervision) as this young East CLC student is doing?

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Michael Ardrey, Tallmadge CLC Program Ass't

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center is open and our nearly 30 students are adjusting to "after-school" routines and structures. New staff member, Michael Ardrey (pictured at left) is guiding and encouraging students as they complete their homework. In addition to his work at the Tallmadge CLC, Michael is a freshman at OU-L. He is motivating our kids to do well in school and also learning first hand techniques and strategies that will prepare him to be a teacher.

West After School Center

The students (over 30 and growing each day) are back after school at the West After School Center! We are glad to be a part of the West Elementary School neighborhood. We finished our first week by making houses to represent where we live and surrounded our center with them. Stop in and see where we live and add your house to our neighborhood!

Members of the Board of Directors joined the staff of the West After School Center in welcoming parents of registered students and others in process at a tailgating kick-off event on September 9, 2009. More than 50 family members attended.

While some of their classmates are still asleep or wasting time at home playing video games or sitting in front of the TV, students in the WASC A.M. childcare program are engaged in learning activities that give them a head start for what lies ahead for them each day at school.

COMMUNITY NEWS

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

Volunteers will be joining all WASC program sites NEXT WEEK!

Planning is in process to partner with mentors from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Fisher Catholic High School. Bring your professional colleagues and join us - and turn a young child on to learning!

WANTED!!

A FEW GOOD PEOPLE
Experience not necessary
The school bell will soon be ringing and we need volunteers at all our locations (WASC, East, Cedar Heights and Tallmadge)

To learn more, contact Chris Kuttler at 653-5678
Our volunteers are key to our success.
One hour a week makes a difference in a child’s life.

Know someone that recently lost a job? There may be forms of assistance of which they may be unaware.

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

Community Care Day

Each September, the United Way of Fairfield County

organizes a community volunteer activity to provide service to non-profit agencies such as the WASC. On September 15, we welcome Chief Bailey and officers from the Lancaster Police Dept. who will help with various improvement projects here at our center.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Whether we choose to believe it or not, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that our country and others in the northern hemisphere will experience an outbreak, possibly a pandemic, of the H1N1 Flu as the weather turns colder in the coming weeks and months. Preparation is important to effectively deal with what might transpire. We can minimize the effects of the flu and its spread by following some good health habits.

  1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. Stay home when you are sick.

  2. Stay home from work, afterschool, childcare, school, and errands when you are sick, except to seek medical care.  Keep sick children at home except to see medical care. You will help prevent others from catching the illness. Cover your mouth and nose.

  3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Learn to "sneeze in your sleeve."

  4. Wash your hands often. Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs.

  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

  6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

There is no vaccine available at this time for this new flu virus, so it is important for people living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others. If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in impacted areas should take the everyday preventive actions listed above.
People who develop an illness with fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

We appreciate the many community agencies that help students and families with acquisition of their back to school supplies. Likewise, with a limited budget and four centers to provide for, the West After School Center is always in need of the list at the right.

Donations are appreciated.

THANK YOU!! to all those who have generously contributed!

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

Watch for our "Harvest Show" coming soon!

The Goals for our Television Program:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Healthy After-School Snacks --- Portion control is the KEY!

For most of us, there are no bad foods, just bad portions. The reality is that growing kids need the starches and calories that come from many foods, but not 5 servings of them (what many kids consume who aren't supervised after school). Our after-school snacks and suppers meet the USDA required portion sizes for school-age children as well as the recommended servings of fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. found at MyPyramid.gov

Our A.M. childcare students enjoy a brisk game of Wii Boxing before getting  ready for school. They get the blood flowing and burn calories and are wide awake for learning in their classrooms. Come try this with some time - it isn't easy!
