A 21st CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER
Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

from the office of Dr. Paul G. Young, Executive Director

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Visit our website at: http://www.westafterschoolcenter.org/
This weekly update is distributed via email to the WASC Board of Directors & Staff, Volunteers, School Staffs, Parents, State and National Afterschool Advocates, Providers, and Community Leaders

If we could figure out a way to bottle preschoolers' enthusiasm during Halloween, we could solve our nation's energy crisis.

Our kids loved dressing up in costumes and dancing with their teachers in our attempt to deplete their energies and excitement for the season.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

The West After School Center hosted teachers and students from the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ecot) while they completed their mandated state testing this past week.

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at the Cedar CLC  the students enjoyed the benefits of fitness. Mr. Shupp, Cedar Hts. PE Teacher, has also joined the after school staff and has been a great addition. Each time the students meet with Mr. Shupp, they are encouraged to work hard as a team and to focus on the importance of staying active. Cedar Fitness - a must have!!

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge After School Program welcomed Mr. Chad Reed from the Community Action Recycling Center on Friday, October 24th. Mr. Reed shared information regarding what materials can be recycled and how students and their families can recycle as well the reasons why we need to recycle. Following his presentation the students created a craft project from recycled materials.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center had fun making their own version of a Jack-o-Lantern mask for Halloween. They also worked on making Count Dracula and the Mummy. What ghoulishly talented students we have!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Don't miss it!
