Cedar Community Learning Center

At the Cedar CLC, we have made recruiting volunteers one of our major focuses and goals for the year.  Lacy K. Doughty is a sophomore at Lancaster High School.  She is an honors student and is very interested in helping students succeed. Our recruiting efforts have resulted in eight (8) consistent high school students attending the Cedar CLC. They have been putting a great deal of time to help the students with homework and have been a great addition to the program. We want to send a "Big Shout Out" to all the volunteers from Lancaster High School.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Tallmadge CLC students enjoyed their first Fun Friday by studying Play Dough! Three different types of play dough were made: 1) cooked, 2) uncooked, and 3) peanut butter. Students then studied the three types plus store-bought play dough to examine the differences in such things as smell, texture, color, cost, availability, and ease of use. All students took a bag of play dough home to determine its shelf life.

Students spent this week celebrating Columbus Day by reading about Christopher Columbus, his life and travels. They also worked in an activity book that had them charting his path to the New World, learning the parts of his sailing ships and other fun activities.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Don't miss it!
