Your home should be a safe haven. But do you regularly check for home fire hazards? If not, there is the potential for danger. Fire departments responded to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006. That’s why the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2008 is “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!

The students, staff, and volunteers of the West After School Center and programs at Cedar Heights and Tallmadge schools participate in monthly emergency drills.

Are you prepared? Do you have a plan?  Do your children know it?

  8:30        A.M. Childcare Students Depart for School (until 3:30)

                  ELI & Head Start Classes Begin

  9:30         Parent/Adult Learning Opportunities (GED), T & Th

  11:30       ELI and Head Start Lunch

  3:30         P.M. Childcare & 21st CCLC Tutoring Begin

  5:30         Supper (free) for students (modest fee for adults)

  6:00 p.m.  WASC Childcare Closes    Optional Adult Learning Opportunities

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at the Cedar Community Learning Center (Cedar CLC), the focus was on Voter Registration. Voter registration forms were made available for parents or individuals who are not registered to vote so that they could complete that by the deadline on October 6, 2008. Also, this week the Cedar CLC had a site visit from the licensing specialist from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). The report concluded positive feedback and an "In Compliance" status over all. We certainly want to thank the staff here at Cedar CLC for their hard work and the WASC for the continuous mentoring of the the center and future plans to make Cedar CLC a "Step-Up to Quality" center.
 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center will began serving students on Monday, September 29 with more than 25 students enrolling the first week. Staff has been hired and enrollment is currently underway. We look forward to a successful year in our new location.
 

West After School Center

Students at the WASC participated in "Read for the Record" -- a nation wide event sponsored by Jumpstart.  In addition to reading Corduroy, by Don Freeman, students illustrated the cover of his book. This is the 40th anniversary of it's publishing.
