AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

NEWS RELEASE - Lancaster, Ohio.  Congratulations to Julie Bibler who will become the Interim WASC Executive Director beginning January 1, 2010. The WASC Board of Directors offered the position to Ms. Bibler following their monthly meeting this week.  Julie, a long-time Lancaster resident, has three years experience as the WASC program site director and looks forward to six weeks of transition time with Dr. Paul Young, outgoing WASC Executive Director, who is leaving to become the Interim President and CEO of the National AfterSchool Association, based in Washington, DC. Congratulations, Mrs. Bibler -- the Board, staff, students, families, partners, and stakeholders of the West After School Centers look forward to a smooth leadership transition and great things ahead in 2010.

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at Cedar Heights we are featuring a video clip (click on the links) of the 5th grade D.A.R.E graduation ceremony. Several officers from the Lancaster Police Department (LPD) were in attendance along with past DARE students who are now in High School. We are also featuring a small clip from our Math Session with students.

East Community Learning Center

Students at the East Community Learning Center enjoy healthy snacks before beginning their extended learning activities in homework. reading and math. The students really enjoyed their oranges -- and as they were enjoying this snack we talked about the nutritious value of fruits and vegetables.
Our guest author, Margaret Wolford, from Hebron, Ohio, discussed how she became a writer and where she writes. She also discussed the illustrations of her book "No Sugar Coating." Margaret has completed four additional books of a series and is looking to get them published as a set. She is pictured below working with a group of students on the concept of similes and metaphors. She explained how she used similes and metaphors in her books. Her book is available to anyone wishing to purchase one. They are $12.00. She will be at WASC, TCLC, and CCLC to autograph copies.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Fire House No.1 visited Tallmadge on Friday the 13th (click HERE for video). They showed us the fire and medic trucks with all the whistles and bells. They also discussed the gear they wear when fighting a fire and how it keeps them safe. Thank You to the staff of Fire House No. 1 and all the brave men and women of the Lancaster Fire Department. A special thanks to Lt. Moore, Mr. Fouch, Mr. Scott, Mr. Anchron, Mr. McQueary and Mr. Hubble for spending the afternoon with us.

West After School Center

The students at WASC had the opportunity to participate in Speed Cup Stacking. Mrs. Diane Warner brought her children, Amy and Adam, to our Center to assist her in teaching this new sport. Speed Cup Stacking is a fitness-based sport that children from all backgrounds and abilities can do.

Cup stacking not only promotes physical fitness, but also academic learning.

Students who cup stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. This is achieved by students using both their right and left sides of their brain. When students cup stack, they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement. Mrs. Warner will be back in December to help our children grow and improve in all areas!

We thank volunteer Anya Hajost who worked for an entire day raking leaves and cleaning our gardens one nice day last week. And she even stayed to play board games with the students.

Children's Author Margaret Wolford (Newark, Ohio) will be visiting our centers in November and December

No Sugar Coating
by Margaret Wolford

"Alana thinks keeping a journal is just one more boring assignment until she realizes her life is anything but dull! Who really is Janamarie? Why does Kimmie act so strangely outside of school? Is making mashed potatoes that big of deal? Join Alana in No Sugar Coating as she solves a mystery or two, learns a lesson about friendship, and endures her mother's terrible cooking. A journal that at first seemed like a dumb idea becomes a place to record the mysterious, wonderful, and sometimes painful happenings in ten-year-old Alana Davis' life. No Sugar Coating may be her first journal, but it won't be her last."

Hear Ms. Wolford at the WASC on December 4, the Cedar CLC on December 11, and the Tallmadge CLC (TBD) in January, 2010.

Look for our after-school program site directors as they play "musical chairs"  in the next couple weeks visiting each other's programs. The purpose of these planned, rotating visits is to share ideas and best practices and allow time for on-site observation and consultation.  We know all our programs will be better as a result - and we always welcome visitors!

GOOD NEWS?? - During the week of November 1-7, 2009, influenza activity remained high in the United States, with some key indicators decreasing slightly and others continuing to climb as reported in FluView. Flu activity is widespread in 46 states. Nationally, visits to doctors for influenza-like-illness declined slightly from last week, but are still very high. Flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to increase and are very high nation-wide compared to what is expected for this time of year. (source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention)

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Our next Healthy Living for Kids Show features our staff and students talking about what turns their lights on about being involved in  after-school.  Check out the show's introduction HERE.
