GO BUCKEYES!!!

AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This past week, we feature two major activities. Students and staff of the Cedar CLC honored veterans. Cedar staff gave a brief shout to our veterans. Click HERE to see it.  In addition, Cedar CLC students enjoyed Art week. This week they began to work on self-portraits by using the example of Pablo Picasso.

East Community Learning Center

Students from the East Community Learning Center were busy using their talents to record a song "Exercise and Energize" for the Healthy Living for Kids TV show.  Through music, the students identified that we live in a fast-paced world where it is sometimes hard to make good choices concerning our health.  It is great to be reminded now and then about how our choices affect our lives and how we feel.  The students also enjoyed watching camerman, Mike McNeese, capture the activity and learn how a television show is made.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week, Nancy Morrison, from the Humane Society, visited the Tallmadge CLC. She brought a special friend with her, a dog she rescued named Daisy. She taught us how to adopt and care for the many varieties of animals she gets at the society. We also honored two more HEROES of the week -- Callie Thornton and Cody Curry.

West After School Center

The West After School Center remembered our servicemen and women on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009, with a program featuring one of our volunteers, Mrs. Betty Tudor. Mrs. Tudor was a Navy nurse for 20 years. She enlisted in the military after graduating from the University of Cincinnati because she wanted to do something exciting. She was stationed around the world including time in Puerto Rico, Newfoundland, and many posts in the United States. She finished her career in Washington State and decided to come home to Ohio. Betty enjoyed her time in the Navy helping many men and women while serving our country. The students at the WASC saluted our friend and thanked her for sharing her career story with us!

Click HERE to listen to Mrs. Tudor's presentation.

Children's Author Margaret Wolford (Newark, Ohio) will be visiting our centers in November and December

No Sugar Coating
by Margaret Wolford

"Alana thinks keeping a journal is just one more boring assignment until she realizes her life is anything but dull! Who really is Janamarie? Why does Kimmie act so strangely outside of school? Is making mashed potatoes that big of deal? Join Alana in No Sugar Coating as she solves a mystery or two, learns a lesson about friendship, and endures her mother's terrible cooking. A journal that at first seemed like a dumb idea becomes a place to record the mysterious, wonderful, and sometimes painful happenings in ten-year-old Alana Davis' life. No Sugar Coating may be her first journal, but it won't be her last."

Hear Ms. Wolford at the East CLC on November 13; WASC on December 4, the Cedar CLC on December 11, and the Tallmadge CLC (TBD) in January, 2010.

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

What you can do to protect yourself from the Swine Flu… (source: www.examiner.com)

Follow some common sense protections emphasized for any flu, including seasonal flu:

  • Keep your hands washed as simple as this sounds, it is one of your best defense in washing away viruses effectively.

  • Use a hand sanitizer when you are unable to wash with soap and water.

  • Avoid being near others who might be sick to avoid breathing droplets they have sneezed or coughed, or touching something they have touched.

  • Try to limit touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Keep your immune system healthy.

  • Eat nutritious foods-consume a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts to boost the immune system.

  • Exercise daily –walk or dance in your home.

  • Manage your stress level through relaxation therapy.

  • Get your rest and a good night sleep.

  • Keep a distance of at least three feet between yourself and others whenever possible.

  • If things continue to get worst it is recommended to wear a mask and gloves.

And finally no, you can’t get the swine flu from eating pork.  The reason is the influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled cooked pork and/or a pork product is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

Wash Your Hands! Avoid the Flu!

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Our next Healthy Living for Kids Show features our staff and students talking about what turns their lights on about being involved in  after-school.  Check out the show's introduction HERE.
