AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week we decided to show you a little bit of what goes on at Cedar Heights Elementary during the school day. What you are going to see are two outstanding 5th grade teachers , Mrs. Gerkin and Mrs. Post. They are just a small part of a successful school, but it’s important to know what is happening and from the looks of it, great teachers produce great students. Lets rock Cedar Heights!

East Community Learning Center

East CLC Assistant Program Director Robin McBroom and program assistant Terry Carpenter, are pictured with a valuable volunteer from LHS, Steffan Radatz, playing a game of boggle with Brandon Patterson at the conclusion of the program day. Brandon had a great time reinforcing spelling and was giving the adults a good run for the high score.  Also pictured, volunteer Fred Menigat works with Noah Cremeans on the words for the weekly spelling test. Fred is a great volunteer and enjoys working with the students.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

This week we invited Danielle Passek, a local author, to read us her book, How the Hyena Found His Giggle Box. She also shared some ideas with us about brainstorming and how to get ideas to write stories. We also awarded two more students the title of HERO of the week -- Connor Earle and Bradley Good. Good job gentleman -- you always give your best effort and we appreciate it!  Click HERE to see our author.

West After School Center

Every month at the West After School Center, we have a guessing game. This month's item was a jar half filled with candy corn. The winner was Bailee Kiger. She guessed 275 pieces. The correct number was 281. Congratulations to Bailee!

WASC childcare students have been very busy these last couple of weeks, they especially enjoyed making cupcake ghosts before Halloween.

Children's Author Margaret Wolford (Newark, Ohio) will be visiting our centers in November and December

No Sugar Coating
by Margaret Wolford

"Alana thinks keeping a journal is just one more boring assignment until she realizes her life is anything but dull! Who really is Janamarie? Why does Kimmie act so strangely outside of school? Is making mashed potatoes that big of deal? Join Alana in No Sugar Coating as she solves a mystery or two, learns a lesson about friendship, and endures her mother's terrible cooking. A journal that at first seemed like a dumb idea becomes a place to record the mysterious, wonderful, and sometimes painful happenings in ten-year-old Alana Davis' life. No Sugar Coating may be her first journal, but it won't be her last."

Hear Ms. Wolford at the East CLC on November 13; WASC on December 4, the Cedar CLC on December 11, and the Tallmadge CLC (TBD) in January, 2010.

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

What you can do to protect yourself from the Swine Flu… (source: www.examiner.com)

Follow some common sense protections emphasized for any flu, including seasonal flu:

  • Keep your hands washed as simple as this sounds, it is one of your best defense in washing away viruses effectively.

  • Use a hand sanitizer when you are unable to wash with soap and water.

  • Avoid being near others who might be sick to avoid breathing droplets they have sneezed or coughed, or touching something they have touched.

  • Try to limit touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Keep your immune system healthy.

  • Eat nutritious foods-consume a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts to boost the immune system.

  • Exercise daily –walk or dance in your home.

  • Manage your stress level through relaxation therapy.

  • Get your rest and a good night sleep.

  • Keep a distance of at least three feet between yourself and others whenever possible.

  • If things continue to get worst it is recommended to wear a mask and gloves.

And finally no, you can’t get the swine flu from eating pork.  The reason is the influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled cooked pork and/or a pork product is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

Wash Your Hands! Avoid the Flu!

Look for the WASC "Sneeze" Commercial playing on the LSN!

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Our next Healthy Living for Kids Show features our staff and students talking about what turns their lights on about being involved in  after-school.  Check out the show's introduction HERE.
