Random Acts of Kindness

at the West After School Center

The WASC students are learning about paying forward by performing Random Acts of Kindness for others. The students at the center are encouraged to share their good deeds with Mrs. Bibler, who then puts their names in her RAC basket. On Fridays, we will share the student’s stories and recognize them for their thoughtfulness. Volunteers, staff, students and our partners are encouraged to participate.

A Random Act of Kindness is one that is performed by a person or persons wishing to either assist or cheer up a stranger. There will generally be no other reason than to make people smile, or to be happier. This gesture maybe either spontaneous or something planned in advance.

Don't forget to reset your household clocks and watches before you go to bed, this year on Saturday night – November 3.  You'll get an extra hour of Sunday-morning sleep Nov. 4 because of the time change that rolls our clocks back an hour every fall. This move back to Standard Time -- from Daylight Saving Time, or DST -- takes effect at 2 a.m. the first Sunday in November, rather than the last Sunday in October. The change is part of a break in long-standing pattern. For that, you can thank the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005. To save energy, U.S. legislators set the stage then for 34 weeks of DST, beginning this year. Because of a quirk in the calendar, the DST period will stretch to 35 weeks in 2008. Beginning this year, DST took effect on the second Sunday of March. For many years prior, clocks had been rolled forward an hour at 2 a.m. the first Sunday of April. DST was adopted by a number of nations during the First World War. The practice spread rapidly during the following years, and today, most mid-latitude countries use some form of daylight saving time, on both sides of the equator.  At least one basic rule hasn't changed -- the old reminder to "spring forward, fall back." A report on energy savings generated by this year's DST extension is expected sometime in 2009.

Remember - Daylight Saving Time Ends November 4
