Argentinian teachers learning about American methodology a "funny" picture to share back home  
Our students enjoyed learning about a major South American country, hearing our guests speak in both English and Spanish, and practicing counting for them in Spanish. We thank John Dye and Rosemary Hajost from the Sherman Rotary in Lancaster for arranging this learning and sharing opportunity.  Our guests also benefitted fro their visit and learned about American after-school programming.
 
The West After School Center, with its Early Childhood Initiative (ELI) pre-school program and 21st CCLC before and afterschool program for school-age children, has been informed this week that our programs have passed the annual inspection and will continue as a one-star-rated Step-Up-to Quality Center.

Congratulations to our staff and our board of directors for continued good work and governance.
 
The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.
 

GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

 

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in nine  serving sites in our city:

  1. West After School Center
  2. Robert K Fox Family Y
  3. East Elementary School
  4. Tallmadge Elementary School  
  5. Cedar Heights Elementary School
  6. South Elementary School
  7. Medill Elementary School
  8. Lancaster Club Apartments (Sanderson area)  
  9. River Valley Apartments

 

 

In addition to the grant from the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the West After School Center is pleased to announce that grants in support of the summer lunch program have also been received from the Children's Hunger Alliance and Lancaster's First Presbyterian Church.

      

 

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week
 

Cedar Community Learning Center

We appreciate the support, involvement, and visibility from Cedar Heights principal Dr. Jeromey Sheets in our Cedar Community Learning Center activities -and as you can see, he is game for anything!

This week at the Cedar CLC, Mr. Moses Garcia and Mrs. Della Winters took time and invited all the 5th graders that attended the after-school program during the 2008-2009 school year to a lunch they provided. It was good to have the students in a relaxed setting, eating pizza, and freely talking and sharing talk with Moses and Della. It was also a special way to recognize the 5th graders for participating in the program and wishing the success as they move on to the 6th grade and forward.

 

Eastside Center for Success

Eastside Center students made thumbprint animals on their flower pots and painted a flower as a gift for Mother's Day. Moms who came for pickup were delighted and proud of their children's gift.
     

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

 

The Tallmadge CLC students would like to thank Bailey Thorne for bringing us dinner every night. Thanks Bailey! We also want to thank Ashly Draper for some wonderful weeks of art education this year. During our final week, the students have been working with oil pastels. Thanks to Ashly for great art!
 

 
 

West After School Center

 

Heather Shuster, from the Fairfield department of Health, came to WASC to participate in our Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. This is a national program started by the youth of America to warn of the dangers of using tobacco products. She was very informative and shared models of diseased body parts. The students learned a lot about the bad effects tobacco has on our bodies. This is the second year that we at WASC have participated and want to thank Heather for her time and dedication to this event!

 

    

OPEN HOUSE

at the West After School Center  May 19, 2009

The students at WASC had a wonderful time sharing their work with their parents, grandparents and friends at the West After School Center Open House this week. Many wonderful things happen here during the year and to share them with family was a proud time for our children. As the year comes to a close, we want to thank the families for sharing their children with us. We enjoyed working with each one and believe it was a positive year for everyone.

     

Two soldiers from the U.S. Army recruiting office visited our preschoolers in the Early Learning Initiatives classes and helped them understand the meaning of Memorial Day and important role that our military plays in our daily security.

     
 

 

Look for this new book, which was released at the NAA and NAESP conventions on April 1.

Principal Matters has been designed to help principals and after-school program leaders enhance their collaborative relationships.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
