ATTENTION PARENTS!!

The West After School Center is accepting applications for its summer childcare program (safe, clean, affordable, and air-conditioned). The center will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to accommodate the needs of working parents (based on adequate participation levels during those hours). Meals and snacks will be included in the weekly cost of the care. Any school age child (entering grades 1-6) from Lancaster or surrounding areas may register. Families that are eligible for Title XX benefits may have a portion or all of their weekly costs reduced. This program service will begin Monday, June 4 and operate until Friday, August 17. The WASC will be closed July 4. Students will be able to participate in daily fun classes and activities at the WASC, take walking field trips, and maintain and advance their learning skills throughout the summer. To inquire about weekly costs, attendance requirements, and price breaks for siblings, contact Aime Azbell at the WASC, 653-5678. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program can accept  54 students and about half those spots have already been reserved. Act now to reserve spots for your children.

Plan now to take advantage of the Free Summer Lunch Program at the West After School Center. Any student from any school, ages 2-18, can stop in for a free lunch, regardless of current approval status with the school lunch program.  Lunches will be prepared here in our kitchen, and available from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  The Summer Lunch Program will operate June 4 through August 17. The WASC will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, for observance of Independence Day.

Since March 23rd, the WASC fifth graders have been participating in The Black Dot Project, an art and media literacy workshop series led by artist educator Dr. Alison Colman, of Ohio University. The purpose of the Black Dot Project is to teach children to think critically about advertising and branding, particularly advertisements targeting children that feature sugary junk food and cereals. To date, the fifth graders have engaged in activities such as talking and writing about works of art that examine the impact of advertising on our society, designing Black Dot tee shirts, discussing the visual components of cereal box packaging, and analyzing the underlying messages expressed in advertisements found in magazines. Additional information about the Black Dot Project can be found at http://www.blackdotproject.net, and additional photo documentation can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/alisoncolman/.

Adult Learning Opportunities at the WASC

GED classes are offered at the WASC on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as part of a collaboration with Fairfield Career Center. We are enrolling more and more adult learners. If you, or someone you know, would like to earn a GED, please contact us here at the WASC.  Stop by and see for yourself how you can do this!

The WASC Tutor Committee Members and staff members from Lancaster's Eastside Center for Success enjoyed a site visit on May 1 to Delaware City Schools (Woodward Elementary) to observe their 21st CCLC/School Age ChildCare (SACC) program. We appreciate the Woodward staff being such good hosts and allowing the Lancaster representatives to see the Leap Frog program in action. Special thanks to Kathy McWatters of the Delaware Union ESC and Karen Jackson of the Delaware City Schools for helping us coordinate this visit. It was a wonderful learning, sharing, and networking opportunity.
