GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in three additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side neighborhoods.

The economic downturn has challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children. Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in nine locations this summer.

Let's work to feed our kids - and have fun together doing it!

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

Among the advantages of having the Cedar CLC  within a school are the resources that the after-school program can provide for the students, families, and the staff. The student pictured (at left) in this Cedar Heights fourth grade classroom has been taking advantage of the interactive Mimio white board.  Her teacher, Mrs. Tracey, who also works for the Cedar CLC, (and whose room is used in the after-school program), has been having her class use the Mimio for math, science, videos, and just about anything that can be used via computer to enhance a lesson and stimulate the students with this kind of technology.

Eastside Center for Success

Eastside CFS students started cotton seeds in plastic bags with moist paper towels. After journaling and recording the progress of their seeds growth, the students transplanted their seedlings into potting soil flower pots. At the same time we are comparing seeds from space with seeds from earth for a NASA project. Students will record the growth of the space seeds and the earth seeds to identify similarities and differences. This data will be reported to NASA and compared with other schools participating in the project.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center continues to enroll new students. If you know of students or families attending Tallmadge Elementary School that would have interest, please contact Mrs. Jane Hart, 740-475-9229.

to see Mr. Overton teach introduce this student to the basics of playing the banjo - an important instrument in American history.

As part of our Friday Fun  Day series, students at the West After School Center got a hands-on opportunity to learn about playing the banjo, learn about the instrument's historical role in America's western expansion, and ask questions of the presenter, Mr. Mitch Overton, director of the Lancaster Parks and Recreation  Department.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
