There is still a need for an after school program in almost half the public schools in America.

A study released in February by National Center for Education Statistics provides a national profile of various types of formal after-school programs physically located at public elementary schools in 2008. These programs included stand-alone programs that focus primarily on a single type of service (e.g., only day care) and broad-based programs that provide a combination of services such as academic enrichment and cultural activities. This report focuses on four broad types of after-school programs:

(1)  fee-based stand-alone day care programs for which parents paid fees;

(2)  stand-alone academic instruction/tutoring programs that focus exclusively on academic instruction or tutoring, including Supplemental Educational Services in schools that did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress;

(3)  the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLCs) administered through the federally funded 21st CCLC Program to provide academic enrichment opportunities; and

(4)  other types of formal stand-alone or broad-based after-school programs.

Fifty-six percent of public elementary schools reported that one or more after-school programs were physically located at the school in 2008. Forty-six percent of public elementary schools reported a fee-based stand-alone day care program; 43 percent reported one or more stand-alone academic instruction/tutoring programs; 10 percent reported a 21st CCLC, and 16 percent reported other types of after-school programs. Together, the various types of after-school programs accounted for an estimated 4 million enrollments. These include duplicated enrollments because students could be enrolled in more than one program. The proportion of public elementary schools reporting that their students attended after-school programs at another location ranged from 46 percent for fee-based stand-alone day care to 3 percent for 21st CCLCs.

Spring Forward!

Spring cannot be far away!

American Red Cross Supports Local Food Pantries

The American Red Cross of Fairfield County will host its first food drive in March.  Each year the President of the United States proclaims March “Red Cross Month.”  The American Red Cross uses this opportunity to promote its services to the American public.  This year the local chapter is asking volunteers, blood donors and those attending a Health and Safety Service class during the month of March to bring a non-perishable food item in support of United Way of Fairfield County-funded food pantries.  According to Nancy Meyer, Communications Coordinator, “participating in a Health & Safety class or being a blood donor is rewarding on so many levels, and an event like a food drive (in such tough economic times) and the experience is even more gratifying.  Call 740-687-5585 for more information.

 gathering ideas for their

after school program.

A group of nearly one dozen community leaders from Medway, Ohio (west of Springfield) in the Tecumseh Local School District, led by Principal Chad Miller,  visited the West After School Center on March 5, equipped with cameras and lists of questions. They were here to observe program ideas, learn about our history and how our facility was constructed, ask questions about our program collaboration with schools, and to gather advice on how they might develop an after school program to fit their unique needs.

(Long-time WASC Board members might remember our fact-finding visit to the Decker center in Barberton, Ohio,  years ago!)

West After School Center staff members participated in the Job Fair held at Ohio University-Lancaster on Friday, March 6, speaking with people about job opportunities and reaching out to make excellent connections. Over 400 people visited the job fair in over two hours.

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

Recently, Cedar Heights Elementary School students participated in a fund raiser for “Jump Rope for Heart” In an effort to raise heart health awareness for the American Heart Association, the students at Cedar Heights raised $2,540.10 for the fight against Heart Disease and Strokes. The Cedar CLC is pleased to announce this accomplishment and proud that many of our after school program participants were involved. This week during recreation time, our academic coach, Mr. Shupp, who organized the Jump Rope for Heart effort at Cedar Heights, was able to extend the program after school and encourage all  Cedar CLC students participate.  Great job, Cedar Heights Elementary!

Eastside Center for Success

Eastside Center for Success students and others from East Elementary School enjoyed molding clay projects into Mothers' Day gifts this past Monday evening. In a partnership with Art and Clay On Main, ECFS arranges this enrichment project, arranges to have the projects fired in a kiln, and returns them to their creators in about two weeks.

at the Tallmadge CLC this week.

“Be Poison Smart” was the topic of discussion recently at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center. Students discussed what a poison is, what forms can a poison be, what can a poison do to you, and how good products can also become a poison. Material for the presentation was developed by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Material was sent home with each student to encourage further discussion with parents.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday reading his books and earning award certificates. The students were surprised to learn that he had written over 60 books. Many of his books had imaginative characters, rhymes, and interesting illustrations. His most notable books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

WASC Students & Blue Star Mothers of America Receive Response to their Valentines Project

    My name is SSgt Trent Hamilton and I'm stationed out of Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane WA. I work for an In-flight refueling squadron supporting the entire AOR with fuel for jets and helicopters in the different branches. Our mission is very critical to maintaining Enduring Freedom and we work very long days. Getting mail is very important here, it keeps people happy! Keeping people happy is hard to do when we are away from our families for so long. So on behalf of all of us here at the 376 EAMXS, Manas Air Base we wanted to thank you for what you guys are doing. We greatly appreciate your support. There were also 3 valentine's cards from some of the little ones there " Kathryn, Mitchell, and Austine " I wanted to thank them for taking the time to make them, and thank you all for the goodies! You all have HUGE hearts and the world needs more people like you!

                                                                                                    Thanks again

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Look for the West After School Center's program site directors, Julie Bibler, Moses Garcia, Jane Hart, and Rob Libbee, as they appear as guests on an upcoming March episode of Jack Greathouse's "STUFF" broadcats weekly on the Lancaster Schools Network. Learn what is happening at each site and become aware of new extended learning opportunities being planned for the children of Lancaster  -- during out-of-school-time and summer -- by these dedicated after school program leaders.
