TO USE THE KROGER
COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

Pick up a copy of the registration form
from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

Simply take the form to the Customer
Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your
Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything
purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30,
2010.

Waldenbooks in the River Valley Mall will
conduct a book drive during which patrons can buy and donate children's
books to the West After School Centers. Watch here for a start date to
be announced soon. Support our local bookstore and our afterschool
programs at the same time. |

attended an
informative community meeting held at the WASC about forming a neighborhood watch. Tim Huston, WASC
Emeritus Board Member, is the driving force in making this community

assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy
needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do
a quick check to see if you might qualify for help. |

Information & Referral of Fairfield County has just received
notice of their designation as a
2-1-1 Call Center!! They have much work to do
switching phone lines to be compatible with
2-1-1, but the bottom line is
hopefully by August, local residents should be able to call
2-1-1 in Fairfield County and
get I&R.

Healthfest
Saturday, August 8th, 2009, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Fairfield Christian Church/Academy, 1st floor
1965 N. Columbus Street
800 packets of school supplies will be given to children (of school age)
in attendance, while supplies last. This all depends on the grant
approval and price availability.
The purpose of the Community Healthfest is to encourage attendees to
participate in health screenings (all free) at the same time as
receiving supplies, giving them some health feedback for healthy
lifestyle changes. Free screenings should include glucose, cholesterol,
vision, hearing, height and weight, color blind test, blood pressure,
bone density and possibly others. Immunizations will be given (as long
as attendees have their records with them) free of charge, thanks to a
sponsor and Fairfield Department of Health.
There will be some inflatable activities out by the playground to
encourage fun exercise. This too, will be free. There is usually a small
child's craft and face painting. The hope is to have fire trucks and
other exploring opportunities for children available.

Nearly
50 children have signed up as participants in the Cedar Community
Learning Center's Summer Reading Program. Participants visited the
school this past Wednesday to read with their Title I teachers and the
Cedar CLC staff. They also discussed what they have already read this
summer, selected books to take home from the collection seen
above, and enjoyed lunch as part of the summer lunch program. |

Jennifer Lape has worked
at the West After School Center for five years as a program assistant.
She is employed full-time as an educational assistant at West Elementary
School where she works with special needs children. In addition to her
part time employment at the WASC, you will often find her working
at TJ Maxx. She is the proud mother of two Lancaster High School
graduates, Alexis and Abby, both who distinguished themselves as
outstanding scholar-athletes while at LHS. Jennifer and her daughters
live in Lancaster. |

Stacey Greaves lives in
Baltimore, Ohio. She has an Associates Degree in Mental Health from
Belmont Tech. in St. Clairsville. She has worked as a Head Start Teacher
in Baltimore since 2001. When not working, she enjoys time with her
family, reading, and kick boxing! |

These resources are becoming part of a training workshop
being planned by the National Association of Elementary School
Principals (NAESP)
and the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) to promote
collaboration between principals and after-school program leaders and the
development of extended learning opportunities for
children across the country.
Dr. Young traveled to Washington DC this week to
meet with and help prepare a small group of trainers from across the county who utilize these resources
and others in the advancement of the workshop in states across the nation this
coming school year.
