Happy New Year!

IT IS AFTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE TIME
Parents!!  We want to meet with you.  We will be conducting mid-year conferences with parents at each of our afterschool program sites the week of January 26. Simply schedule a brief meeting time when you pick up your child, learn about his or her progress in the Leaptrack program, complete a short on-line survey, tell us your needs, and learn more about what happens afterschool in Lancaster. Scheduling will take place beginning January 12.

Working together, we can effectively extend children's learning opportunities - after school!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at Cedar CLC, the students have been focusing on fitness with their gym instructor, Mr. Shupp. Mr. Shupp has challenged the students to Jump-2-Fitness, making them aware of health and a commitment to stay active and minimize their time on video game systems. We know the task is hard, but we believe the students will commit and follow through.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Students at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center spend a portion of each day working on their homework. Homework may not be completed during the after school time, but all students should get a good start on the completion of important daily assignments. Usually, students are assisted by Tallmadge CLC staff with math, spelling, and reading homework.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center have been investigating their fingerprints in art this week. They have been studying the flow patterns and enlarging them to paint with primary and secondary colors of their own design. They have found multiple ways to make each person's fingerprints into interesting pop art!

Our students love the LeapTrack Program and are showing steady gains in reading and math skills. Click HERE to watch observe a lesson in action.

Early Learning Initiative Class

Click HERE and "Walk on Sunshine"

Want to brighten your day during this dark, gray, cold spell in January. Click in the link at the left and watch the students in the Early Learning Initiative Class dance to "Walking on Sunshine". For certain, they will brighten your day as they do ours - everyday!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
