AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

It is 2010, a new year, a fresh start, a new beginning, and Cedar CLC is here to continue serving the community. Mrs. Tracey's 4th grade class is starting the year with smiles and exciting science projects. We have been able to capture some of these moments and will begin to showcase as many of the grades and teachers as possible, along with the Cedar CLC extended learning opportunities. Welcome, everyone.

East Community Learning Center

The students at the East Community Learning Center have returned to school after the holiday break ready to get to work!  This week Mr. Dorion (gym teacher at East and Academic Coach for the after school program) has provided some outstanding indoor physical exercise. In the pictures you will see students working on soccer skills and building their upper body strength by using a plunger device to propel themselves on a scooter.  The After school program not only builds the minds of the students but the body as well.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The last week of school for 2009 was a fun week full of activities.  On Tuesday, the t.v. show, Healthy Living for Kids filmed at Tallmadge.  They filmed us in gym class, and interviewed Mr. Lawson and Mrs. Turner.  They also interviewed two students from Tallmadge, Lori Fritz and Jimmy Thompson.  Watch for this episode to air in February.  On Friday, we had our Holiday Party.  We painted ornaments and watched the Muppets Christmas Carol.  We hope everyone had a lovely holiday break and we are eager to get back to work this week.

West After School Center

The last few days before break were busy at WASC.  After the fun we had at the beginning of the week with “Believe” and Christmas Bingo, the rest of the week was sure to bring more excitement.  On Thursday, members from the Humane Society came to talk to the students about the importance of taking care of your pets and how much responsibility it takes to have a pet.  The students even got to meet Mack, a Great Dane, who was taller than most of them!  Friday brought more fun at WASC when Mrs. Diane Warner brought her children, Amy and Adam, back to do more cup stacking.  This time the students were able to do relay races to see who could stack cups the fastest.  The children even got the teachers to join in the very close races!

Meet Michelle Ritchlin

Michele is a 1994 graduate of William V. Fisher Catholic High School, and a 1998 graduate of The Ohio State University where she majored in International Studies.  After graduating from college, she returned to Lancaster and became a licensed real estate appraiser.  In 2007, Michele began working at St. Mary Elementary School and joined the staff of the Tallmadge Community Learning Center the next year. In August, 2009, she assumed the Site Administrator position. She and her husband, Brodie, live in Lancaster and have two dogs.

Children's Author Margaret Wolford (Newark, Ohio) will be visiting our centers in November and December

No Sugar Coating
by Margaret Wolford

"Alana thinks keeping a journal is just one more boring assignment until she realizes her life is anything but dull! Who really is Janamarie? Why does Kimmie act so strangely outside of school? Is making mashed potatoes that big of deal? Join Alana in No Sugar Coating as she solves a mystery or two, learns a lesson about friendship, and endures her mother's terrible cooking. A journal that at first seemed like a dumb idea becomes a place to record the mysterious, wonderful, and sometimes painful happenings in ten-year-old Alana Davis' life. No Sugar Coating may be her first journal, but it won't be her last."

Hear Ms. Wolford at Tallmadge CLC  January 15, 2010.

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
