Parent Conferences

Parent Survey, January 07

Results from our January Parent Survey are being tabulated and we plan to share the results next week. We appreciate being able to use our computer lab to conduct this web-based survey (Thanks, Bob Arthur!). We thank our parents for sharing with us during these conferences. It appears that we have about 83% of our conferences already completed, a few more scheduled today and early next week, with a preliminary response rate to our survey of about 75% of parents. THANK YOU!

SACERS

SCHOOL-AGE CARE ENVIRONMENT RATING

Alycia Orcena from Action for Children will be here on Tuesday, January 23, at 3:00 p.m. to complete a site visit for our SACERS assessment. You might remember that we started this last year, but the process stalled. WASC staff members are encouraged to review the information that is linked on the right and work with Julie Bibler to prepare or this visit. Alycia should be here until dismissal.

Our Little Tykes computer has arrived, put together (Thanks Bob Arthur!) and will be moved to the ELI Classroom very soon. This special computer comes to the WASC compliments of Foundations, Inc., IBM, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). THANK YOU!

OU-L/WASC Winter Reading Improvement Program

Dr. June Slobodian and her students from OU-L started the reading improvement program last Saturday with approximately 30 students in grades 3-6 from many of the local elementary schools. They will also be here Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and 24 and March 10.

Almost one-half (47%) of youth who drop out of school do so because they find school unchallenging or less important to them than other options. Many surveys indicate students would work hard academically if it were asked of them.

Did you know?

... what often happens to children who are left alone. They spend more time watching TV and risk obesity and health problems from lack of exercise. These children are more likely to be victims or commit crimes during the hours they are on their own, and they are more susceptible to the temptations of smoking, drug use, and sexual activity. (p. 11).

	Staff Trainings ODJFS Requirements January 30, 2007 6:15 - 9:45 p.m. - CPR (all staff must attend) January 31, 6:15-9:45 p.m. -- First Aid (only those who need certification) all fees will be paid by the WASC.

Coming in January 19, 2007	We are excited about this afternoon's visit with television personality David Wayne from NBC-4 in Columbus. David graduated from Ohio University with a degree in journalism and lives nearby in Pickerington. He will share several videos of his television interviews and talk with our students about the media world from a career point-of-view. Parents, volunteers, and friends are welcome!

Submit your child's or grandchildren's art creations in JPEG form via email to: pictures@westafterschoolcenter.org Include the artist's name and age. Copies will be made and added to the West After School Center Student Art Gallery, posted on the WASC Website (www.westafterschoolcenter.org), and featured on subsequent episodes of Healthy Living for Kids.
