American Red Cross Supports Local Food Pantries
The American Red Cross of Fairfield County will host its first food
drive in March. Each year the President of the United States
proclaims March “Red Cross Month.” The American Red Cross uses this
opportunity to promote its services to the American public. This
year the local chapter is asking volunteers, blood donors and those
attending a Health and Safety Service class during the month of
March to bring a non-perishable food item in support of United Way
of Fairfield County-funded food pantries. According to Nancy Meyer,
Communications Coordinator, “participating in a Health & Safety
class or being a blood donor is rewarding on so many levels, and an
event like a food drive (in such tough economic times) and the
experience is even more gratifying. Call 740-687-5585 for more

Are
you interested in joining a group of colleagues that will review
afterschool licensing and make recommendations for revisions to
appropriate state agencies? This is a opportunity for those in the
field to help describe a "better fit" for 21st CCLCs in this compliance
process. Now is the time for action. Commendations to the Ohio AfterSchool Network

Cedar Community Learning Center |
 |
This
week at Cedar CLC students were participated in the
Second Step Program with Lindsay Badgley from
New Horizons Youth
and Family Center. The students were able to
learn and talk about conflicts and conflict
resolutions. What the students appreciated most
about this time was the ability to talk with an
adult and their fellow peers in the security of a
school environment. Students are grateful for this
type of opportunity offered at the Cedar CLC. We
would like to thank the Cedar Heights elementary
staff and administration for sharing this great
resource with us.

Eastside Center for Success |

Eastside students worked with Tom Schisler
from Wakeena Nature
Preserve to identify animals tracks they might find in nature.
Students were able to identify various animals by tracking their
footprints.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center |
 |
American Sign Language
instructor, Lori Williams, visited the Tallmadge Community
Learning Center recently to introduce the students and staff
to some basic sign language information. Lori currently
teaches a weekly class in our community to people who have
hearing issues and to people who want to have better skills
to converse with the hard of hearing. Lori and the Tallmadge
students learned the signs for the entire alphabet as well
as an item that started with the corresponding letter.
Students were encouraged to continue practicing the signs at
home.

Chad Reed, from
Lancaster
Fairfield Community Action, spoke with WASC students abut recycling
and litter prevention and provided hands-on activities to create new
items from recyclables as part of our Friday Fun Day Series
program activities. |

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC
Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the
WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.
The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is
open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for
supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch
program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the
after school programs
serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily
exercise they get.

economical family meals and snacks.
4. Showcase the wealth of community
resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy
lifestyles.
5. Demonstrate the positive impact and
benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have
on children's mental health and social development. |

good oral health habits begins at an early age, and scheduling regular
dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy
