Did you know?

The West After School Center is an independent, non-profit incorporation governed by 17 dedicated volunteers who form the West After School Center Board of Directors. What do they do and when do they do it? Many have been long-time volunteer tutors and mentors with numerous young learners. Others have played key roles in the development of special projects such as Healthy Living for Kids, grant writing, and facility construction and upkeep. Board meetings are held the third Thursday of each month. The mission of the WASC is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community. Our board members do that by directing our multi-faceted operations, inspecting data and reports, protecting the interests of the WASC, expecting and reflecting on results, respecting the rights and needs of those we serve, and connecting with key stakeholders in our community to further promote out mission.

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

The Cedar CLC has incorporated a new tool of technology  - MIMIO Interactive System. Mimio is an interactive system that teachers can use to integrate technology on a daily basis in their classrooms and it has captured the attention of their students.  The Mimio system is very easy to use and transforms any open wall into an interactive learning location for both teachers and students. This new resource will be used daily in the after school program as students engage in Math hands-on activities and use the Internet as part of a learning outlet. We cannot afford to lose this generation with texting, IPods and everything else that competes for their undivided attention and expect traditional methods to work effectively.

Eastside Center for Success

Eastside Students are being “Rock Hounds” this week as they are weighing and describing rocks. Hands on activities are done daily at the center as a part of each day’s activities.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

This week, the students at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center took a little time from their regular routine to complete on-line surveys that provide us anonymous feedback about their experience in the afterschool program. This picture shows the students in the computer lab reading questions and completing the surveys.

Kindergartners in Mrs. Curtice's class at the WASC enjoy some good old-fashioned play time before their parents pick them up after school.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month.

Developing healthy kids with good oral health habits begins at an early age, and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Look for our show coming later this month when Healthy Living For Kids host Angi Marinacci-Young takes our viewers inside the offices of Dr. Jennifer Lape and Dr. Glenn Burns in Lancaster for a first-hand tour of what kids can expect and learn about dental care --- from the dentist's chair!
