Congratulations to our partners, Lancaster-Fairfield County Community Action Head Start, on their successful recent state review by the Ohio Department of Education. This was included in a follow-up letter from Helen O'Leary, the ODE Consultant in charge of the review, "Thanks so much for the very pleasant visit to your program on Monday. Working with you, Kathleen (Cortlessa, ELI Supervisor at WASC), and your teachers is not "working" at all. Your excellent, organized files are a dream come true for a consultant. Thanks again for all the fantastic work you and your staff are realizing for the ELI program." Also, we commend Moses Garcia and his staff at the Cedar CLC for a successful Compliance and Performance Assessment conducted by the Ohio Department of Education in early November.

Coming to the WASC December 10, 2008 7:00 p.m. FREE	Come and enjoy and evening of fun as the Good News Clown Crew shares their comedy show at the West After School Center. Music, magic, and zany skits will entertain young and old in this uplifting show. The Good News Clown Crew is a creative outreach ministry of the Lancaster First United Methodist Church. They have performed for local parades, festivals and organizations as well as National Ministry conferences. Cedar Community Learning Center					This year Cedar CLC has the opportunity to introduce "Student Vibe" as part of our regular rotations after school. Student Vibe is a session held by our New Horizons personal, Lindsay Badgeley, where students gather together to learn about the importance of respect for each other, the value of friendship and honesty and learning how to minimize a conflict before it escalates. The students will engage in these sessions at least twice a month and will have to demonstrate positive behavior and respect for each other. This has been a brief empowering moment from Cedar CLC.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center					The Tallmadge Community Learning Center will soon be expanding its services to serve additional students now that a license upgrade has been obtained. Supper was made available for students as of Monday, December 1.

West After School Center					The students from the West After School Center have teamed up with Blue Star Mothers to support our troops this holiday season. The students created their own Christmas cards to send in the holiday boxes that the group sends at this time of year. The cards were very creative and inspirational. Many wrote notes to the soldiers thanking them and wishing them the best holiday season. This is the second year that the WASC students have participated in this program.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year. The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

			Our Goals: 1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school. 3. Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks. 4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles. 5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.			Don't miss it! 				What does "eat better" really mean? Eating better means making healthy choices. The goal is to have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, but not too many calories. Some people may need to add more fruits and vegetables or whole grains, while cutting back on sugary snacks. Others may need to eat more protein. The idea is to achieve a good balance, and moderation in how much you eat. The good news is that there are guidelines, suggestions, and help to make sure that the kids in your life are eating better every day. Click HERE to learn more.
