AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week we were able to have all site directors from the WASC, Inc. come and join us for a day. The purpose of this experience was for each director to get a feel for the other programs and share ideas, resources, and discuss common issues all site directors experience an d brainstorm solutions. It was an honor to have Julie Bibler, Director of West After School Center; Michele Ritchlin, Director of Tallmadge Community Learning Center;  and Nan Row, Director of East Community Learning Center visit the Cedar CLC.

East Community Learning Center

Lucas Hedges and Triston Mathias are pictured here holding correspondence from their pen pals in Guadalajara, Mexico. Lancaster native and daughter of site director Nan Rowe, Serena Rowe Griffin, lives and teaches English and oboe in Guadalajara. It was a natural fit that the students from the schools would become pen pals. The students from Guadalajara are enrolled in English classes in an after school program. Six of the ECLC students have become pen pals-look for their pictures in weeks to come!

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week at TCLC , our friend, Laurie Anderson, consultant from New Horizons Youth and Family Center, helped us do a craft with turkeys and reflect on things and people for which we are thankful (our volunteers were among the top of many lists).  We also had a chance to relax a little with the Dr. Seuss movie, Horton Hears a Who.  HEROES were not forgotten, we recognized Abigail and Jermaine for their excellent attitudes, effort and respectfulness they exhibited during the week.

West After School Center

Healthy Living for Kids, a television show produced by the West After School Center, filmed two segments this week at the Center. Ashley Draper, an art teacher for WASC, and two students demonstrated how to make large three dimensional snowflakes that can be easily made at home. If you are looking for a fun family activity, give making them a try! Directions will be posted soon on the West After School Center website.
We also filmed two "Kids You Should Know," Gerald Stratton and Brandon Mayhorn, fifth graders who started a campus clean-up program at West Elementary School. These young men are helping to keep our neighborhood green!

What a nice surprise for Mrs. Curtice's first graders, when Lancaster Police Officer Michelle stopped in at WASC!  The students were enjoying their after school snack and were eager to talk. They had a question-and-answer time with Officer Michelle, who spoke about staying safe and explained all of her equipment on her service belt. Officer Michelle also shared that she has five children of her own! Thank you, Officer Michelle, for taking the time to visit with us and helping to ensure that our neighborhood is safe.

Children's Author Margaret Wolford (Newark, Ohio) will be visiting our centers in November and December

No Sugar Coating
by Margaret Wolford

"Alana thinks keeping a journal is just one more boring assignment until she realizes her life is anything but dull! Who really is Janamarie? Why does Kimmie act so strangely outside of school? Is making mashed potatoes that big of deal? Join Alana in No Sugar Coating as she solves a mystery or two, learns a lesson about friendship, and endures her mother's terrible cooking. A journal that at first seemed like a dumb idea becomes a place to record the mysterious, wonderful, and sometimes painful happenings in ten-year-old Alana Davis' life. No Sugar Coating may be her first journal, but it won't be her last."

Hear Ms. Wolford at the WASC on December 4, the Cedar CLC on December 11, and the Tallmadge CLC (TBD) in January, 2010.

Look for our after-school program site directors as they play "musical chairs"  in the next couple weeks visiting each other's programs. The purpose of these planned, rotating visits is to share ideas and best practices and allow time for on-site observation and consultation.  We know all our programs will be better as a result - and we always welcome visitors!

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Kids You Should Know - look for this interview with Gerald Stratton and Brandon Mayhorn, 5th Graders at West School, coming soon to Healthy Living for Kids Show
