Summertime Fun at the WASC

Wouldn't you love to be a preschool age child again and dance and enjoy outdoor water games without any inhibitions? Preschoolers attending the ELI classes at the West After School Center certainly enjoy themselves. Their teachers work hard every day to assure they do!

Dancing a solo Everyone shaking their hips Water and hot summer weather A perfect summer time combination for fun

The

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

will become a reality for the 2008-2009 school year. Earlier this month, the West After School Center was awarded a 21st CCLC grant to provide before and after school services for students and families at that school. The Tallmadge Community Learning Center joins the Cedar Community Learning Center, the Eastside Center for Success, and the WASC as one of four (4) afterschool program sites supporting students and staff in the Lancaster City Schools. More information will follow in August about student selection and registration procedures.  See below about anticipated job openings.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Grant Program's focus is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children.  Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math.  In addition, 21st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic component of the program.  The 21st CCLC Program is a key component of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act.

More than 50 children in the South School area attending our Summer Lunch Program received free water bottles this week. These were made available to our program from the Kendrick Fincher Foundation. They promote proper hydration and heat illness through education. The foundation was started after the tragic death of Kendrick Fincher in Aug. 1995. Commendations to Julie Bibler, Enrichment Program Coordinator at our South School serving site or making this community connection.

Summer Playground Enrichment Activities at the

West School Playground

Hey kids!  The summer vacation is flying by fast. Join Alexis Lape, former West School student, Lancaster HS graduate, and now a scholar-athlete at Miami University on the West School Playground during lunch in August and learn how you, too, might learn skills, taught by Alexis, that could help you reach your dreams and become a scholar-athlete in secondary schools and college. Join her for lunch, exercises, tips, and discussions about planning preparing now for success in school and athletics. This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the Children’s Hunger Alliance. Call 653-5678 for more information about program, or just stop by the WASC, enjoy lunch, and learn.
