Did you know?

There are 100 calories in an 8 oz. bottle of Coke (as well as other brand name soft drinks) -- 200 in a 16 oz. serving -- and 250 in a 20 oz. serving.

Six-eight of those sugar-filled super-sized drinks each day would surpass a child's average daily caloric intake needs.

What's wrong with sugary snacks, anyway?

Sugary snacks taste so good-but they aren't so good for your teeth or your body. The candies, cakes, cookies, and other sugary foods that kids love to eat between meals can cause tooth decay. Some sugary foods have a lot of fat in them too. Kids who consume sugary snacks eat many different kinds of sugar every day, including table sugar (sucrose) and corn sweeteners (fructose). Starchy snacks can also break down into sugars once they're in your mouth. Did you know that the average American eats about 147 pounds of sugars a year? That's a big pile of sugar! No wonder the average 17-year-old in this country has more than three decayed teeth!  (source: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research).

Kids will make good choices, taking fruits and vegetables over less nutritious foods, when given a chance. Encourage healthy eating by creating a supportive environment, where parents and other caregivers model healthy eating. Involving children in shopping, cooking  family meals and even gardening are other important steps in getting kids interested in fruits and vegetables.

TV-Turnoff Week, April 23-28, 2007, is a grassroots project that works. More than 65 national organizations, including the American Medical Association, the National Education Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support or endorse TV-Turnoff Week. TV-Turnoff Week succeeds because a network of thousands works hard to organize local schools, clubs, religious congregations, and communities. Since 1995, more than 24 million people have participated in TV-Turnoff Week.
