Fast Facts about the West After School Center

· After School Tutoring Program originated in September 1997 at 6th Avenue United Methodist Church.

· 17 students were served in the first year by 25 community volunteers.

· The West After School Center partners with West Elementary School in the Lancaster City School District (ADM 5910) located 30 miles SE of Columbus on U.S. Rt. 33.

· Phase I of the current facility opened in September 2003.

· Phase II of the facility (Head Start classrooms and offices) opened in November  2005, funded mostly by a special $89,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

· Enrollment in the after school tutoring program included 94 students attending 90+ days.  We are supported weekly by 100+ community volunteers. More than 150 students were served in the tutoring program.  All 420+ students at West School benefited from a conflict management training program during the 2005-2006 school year provided in collaboration with New Horizons Youth & Family Center.

· 93% of students’ families enrolled in the tutoring program qualify for the Federal Lunch Program.

· The West After School Center was awarded the first-ever Lancaster-Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce Award in 1999.

· The West After School Center was awarded a 5-year 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant in July, 2004.  Potential funding from the grant could total $1.25 million through 2009.

· 2005-2006 expenditures, per Ohio Department of Education/21stCCLC Grant: $299,995.00

o   Instruction $165,971.48 (55% of the total)

o   Building Operations $43,808.93 (15% of the total)

o   Administration: $53,750.00 (18% of the total)

o   Support  Services $6,464.59 (2% of the total)

o   Social Services/Professional Development  $30,000.00 (10% of the total)

o The West After School Center received nearly 10% of its operational revenues from donations from local businesses in tax year 2005.  The WASC became the fiscal agent for both 21st CCLC grants in Lancaster as of 7-1-06 (WASC & Eastside Center for Success at East School).

o Average budgeted salary for an Academic Coach: $10,000

o Pupil to academic coach ratio is 15 to 1.

o Tutoring program operates after school during the school year Monday-Thursday from 3:30-5:00 p.m. with a variety of social service, art, and enrichment programs offered to all students and families of West School from 5:00-6:00 p.m. and on Fridays.

o 46 students from 37 families received direct services from the WASC Social Worker.

o The West After School Center is operated by a 15-member Board of Directors, invited volunteers from within the Lancaster Community.

o The WASC Board of Directors creates the vision and mission statement, establishes goals, sets policies for the center operations, hires the Executive Director and evaluates programming effectiveness.

o WASC Board of Directors meetings are held monthly at 9:30 a.m. on the third Thursday.

o The West After School Center and its volunteers were recognized by the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging with the Service to Seniors Award in May 2005.
